The hands-on workshop is open to artists, designers, students and everybody who is interested. No prior knowledge is required, however participants with some experience are welcome. Its starting point is the observation of cellulose producing bacteria as inhabitant of multiple ecosystems: non-human environments; the laboratory; the artist’s studio.

Microbial cellulose is a polymer produced by a variety of microorganisms which grows into a thick three-dimentional material which may resemle skin and bodily matter. I have used microbial cellulose in various artworks: in my Skin Studies, as featureless prosthetics in Eingeweide, and also genetically engineered cellulose-producing bacteria in Semina aeternitatis.

Participants will compare laboratory protocols and DIY techniques for cultivating cellulose-producing bateria and investigate the aesthetic and design potential of th material in a dedicated prototyping session. Insights into bacteria’s life cycle will promt participants develop innovative ideas, gain specific knowledge, and critically address issues of sustainability, ethics, and aesthetics of working with living organisms. A discussion will follow.

1st day: microbial cellulose: origins and applications in biomedical, artistic, and design; cellulose-producing bacteria: lab & DIY techniques; how to protect cultures from mold and contamination; material observation: fresh and dried cellulose.

Participants will receive a starter and instruction to test their own experimental recipes in the time between the two sessions.

2nd day: comparision of the results of the individual cultures; coating and dying techniques, sketching and prototyping, discussion.
